Don't get sunk by debt in the UAE

With personal lending on track to double this year, alarm bells should be ringing.

But it seems the lessons of the financial crisis are no longer at the forefront of consumers' minds, as personal borrowing hit more than Dh270 billion in the first five months of this year.

The problem, experts say, is a combination of consumerism, poor financial literacy, readily available high levels of credit and clever tricks played by banks to lure people into borrowing as much as they can afford, and sometimes more.

"The regulation is a bit lenient," says Sam Wani, the general manager of the mortgage adviser Independent Finance, who urges extreme caution when signing up for a credit card.

"If customers want to apply for a credit card, they can do it easily, and if they want multiple credit cards, they can get multiple credit cards. There's no credit bureau, so it's difficult for banks to know who they are lending to."

The Government is in the process of establishing Al Etihad Credit Bureau to provide data about individual debtors. It was due to start operating this month and would essentially provide to banks a credit score of borrowers to help them to balance their risk. At the moment, a customer with one credit card that is paid off every month may look low risk, but it is possible that he owes millions of dirhams on credit cards to other banks.

After the 2008 financial crash, the Government introduced rules to try to prevent another disaster on that scale. One of these, Mr Wani explains, is a credit ceiling, which is supposed to prevent banks from giving credit to clients who spend more than 50 per cent of their income servicing existing debts.

"They are supposed to be looking at all these things, mostly when it comes to mortgage lending," he says. "But this doesn't necessarily apply to the smaller debts.

"As mortgage advisers we have to make sure our clients don't get into debt. Most of our clients we talk to have two or three credit cards. We always advise them to cancel all but one.

"People usually have multiple cards because they are easily available and because of the promotions, the freebies attached to getting the credit card."

A compareit4me.com survey this month corroborated this theory and revealed that almost four people in 10 surveyed had three or more credit cards, and half of these people said the cards were almost all near their credit limits.

One of the most common pitfalls, according to the survey, was the trap of transferring debt from one card to another in an attempt to take advantage of a better rate or special promotion, then continuing to use both cards.

"There are 51 banks offering hundreds of different kinds of products," Mr Wani says. "Almost every credit card carries one promotion or another. But fundamentally it boils down to the individual. He has the choice. You can't over-regulate, because you are clamping down on choice and the free market goes away."

Using debt to reduce the balance of another debt is another common money pitfall. The compareit4me.com survey revealed that one person in five was resorting to using a credit card to make personal-loan repayments.

A sizeable 42 per cent admitted to making only the minimum payment on their credit cards each month. This is often a lot more expensive than people realise.

Taking into account compound interest, a debt balance of Dh100 on a credit card with a monthly finance charge of 3 per cent will increase to Dh142.5 by the end of the first year, and Dh203 by the end of the second, if only the minimum monthly payments are made. So 3 per cent is not 36 per cent a year, it is 42.58 per cent.

Taking out credit cards and simply multiplying the monthly rate by 12 is a common and dangerous mistake, Mr Wani says. It is not a representative figure.

In other countries, such as the UK, it is a legal requirement for any advertising of credit to include an APR, or annual percentage rate, which takes into account all charges associated with a product, in addition to the interest rate. This allows people to much more easily work out how their debt can grow.

In the UAE, however, there is no such requirement and banks much prefer to advertise very low monthly figures. It is down to the customer to push for an APR when applying for a credit card or loan.

"If you take a credit card, or you take many credit cards, you need to look at the annual interest, not the monthly. If the bank says 2 per cent, that means 24 per cent a year, but that's not including any charges or costs associated with acquiring that liability," Mr Wani says.

"If you are making a minimum payment you're paying a little bit of the principal and most of the interest. It's not the right thing to do. You can't pay off the outstanding. You must clear the balance every month. This is the only thing to do."

It is always worth checking whether the minimum payment includes only the interest, or also some of the balance.

A quick search of the internet gives a huge number of websites that will calculate an annual compound interest rate using the monthly figure offered by banks.

Despite the monumental financial crash in 2008, it seems banks are as keen as ever to encourage spending on credit. HSBC contacted some of its customers this month with a promotion to collect Air Miles when any of its credit cards are used abroad over the summer.

Spending the equivalent of Dh10,000 would earn the customer 40,000 bonus Air Miles. A bigger spend of Dh50,000 would be rewarded with 125,000 bonus Air Miles - which would buy about Dh900 worth of Sharaf DG vouchers from the Air Miles website.

Even the most financially savvy can be bamboozled by the wording in advertisements.

Earlier this month, eye-catching email adverts from the National Bank of Abu Dhabi were offering car loans at "2.49 per cent per annum*". The small print with the * revealed that the "2.49 per cent is for illustration purposes, effective interest rate is 4.72 per cent per annum calculated on reducing loan balance".

Ahmed, a 31-year-old Emirati, had a lucky escape after taking out a mortgage loan to buy an off-plan investment property in Al Raha Beach.

The father of one, who borrowed close to Dh1 million from an Islamic bank, says that although he isn't struggling to pay back the loan, he is "disappointed in the whole system".

"The way the banks operate is not good. When I took the loan they took a security cheque, so I was guaranteeing my own debt. I have a property but they take a cheque, so if it returns they can file a case with the police. This does not make sense."

Ahmed bought the one-bedroom property in the boom in 2008 hoping the rent would cover the mortgage payments of about Dh8,000 a month. Fortunately, he never missed a payment and the property is now leased out.

"I was lucky. But many, many people were not and the banks are also responsible. They do not act in a responsible way here.

"Many people do not read the terms and conditions, and financial awareness is very low. The banks do not explain things here."

His experience with the bank, which offered him no solutions when he approached them to say his property would not be ready on time, has left Ahmed wary of the entire financial system.

"The wife of a friend went for a top-up loan and when she showed her husband what the bank had offered her, he saw she couldn't afford the monthly payments. This is totally wrong. But I have heard many stories like this."

Souqalmal.com, the price-comparison site, reported in March that about three Emiratis in 10 have no savings at all. Half of western expatriates, it said, save between 10 and 30 per cent of their monthly income.

According to Ambareen Musa, chief executive of the site, although banks have become more responsible over the past few years, there is a huge gap in financial literacy, which is particularly a problem when it comes to advertising.

"Consumers need to be aware that all offers and products have terms and conditions to look out for, so ask the bank under what conditions is the offer applicable."

Customers should also pay more attention to the small print when taking on any sort of credit, she says, particularly credit-card fees on international spends, which most people are not aware of.

"Consumers need to build an understanding of how rates are calculated ? we also have to remember that advertising is always to incite you to buy, whether it's groceries, clothes or baking products, like in any other country.

"It is, however, our responsibility to educate ourselves on the different products."

Israel will free 104 Palestinian prisoners to coincide with the resumption of long-stalled peace talks

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will free 104 Palestinian prisoners to coincide with the resumption of long-stalled peace talks brokered by the United States.

"I agreed to free 104 Palestinians in stages, after the start of negotiations and according to progress," he wrote on his official Facebook page on Saturday.

He did not give details on those to be freed or confirm reports that talks would open in Washington on Tuesday.

A Palestinian official earlier told AFP that the Washington meeting would be attended by chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat, his Israeli counterpart Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and US officials.

The sides are expected to meet for an informal dinner on Monday evening, on the eve, he said.

Israel's Regional Development Minister Silvan Shalom said this week that talks could resume next Tuesday, but neither the date nor venue have so far been confirmed.

"At this time, it seems most important to me that the state of Israel enter (negotiations)," Netanyahu wrote.

"This is important both to maximise the possibility of ending the conflict with the Palestinians and to solidify Israel's position in the complex international reality surrounding us," he added, writing in Hebrew.

Sunday's weekly cabinet meeting will hear a formal statement from Netanyahu on the resumption of peace talks and mandate a ministerial committee to handle the prisoner release, the government website said.

Italian economy minister calls end to recession this year: press

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy's economy will begin emerging from its longest slump since World War Two in the fourth quarter of this year and should grow through 2014, Economy Minister Fabrizio Saccomanni said.

Asked when Italy would exit the recession, Saccomanni told Rome daily Il Messaggero in an interview published on Sunday: "By the end of this year.

"The signs can already be seen in this third quarter, the fourth quarter should see the first positive number. And the whole of 2014 will be positive."

Italy has been in recession since mid-2011 and the country's central bank expects gross domestic product to contract by around 2 percent in 2013 and grow by about 0.5 percent in 2014.

The Rome government, which faces the challenge of reviving the economy while keeping the public deficit within EU-mandated limits, has a 1.3 percent growth forecast for 2014. Most analysts and European authorities see that as too optimistic.

The European Commission recommended in May that Italy be removed from the EU's excessive deficit blacklist, ending strict monitoring of Italian finances which began when it breached the 3 percent-of-GDP limit in 2009.

Saccomanni said now it was no longer blacklisted, Italy had more money to spend for investments and pay arrears the state owes to firms, provided it did not breach the threshold.

Italy is also under pressure to bring down its public debt, which at a projected level of around 130 percent of GDP this year is the second highest in the euro zone after Greece.

Saccomanni said the government would move ahead with plans to use the sale of state properties to cut the debt, though estimates Rome could reap 400 billion euros from the sale of state assets were too high.

"We will start with real estate... it will not be an easy or quick job... but it is right to get going to give a concrete signal to the market," the minister told the newspaper.

He declined to comment on whether stakes held by the state in companies such as Eni , Finmeccanica and Enel could be sold as part of the debt reduction plan.

In a wide-ranging interview, he also said he met his Swiss counterpart last week and they had agreed to resume negotiations on bank transparency and tax evasion in the autumn.

"The aim is that they give us a list of our compatriots who have capital in Switzerland, and we will tax them," he said.

George P. Mitchell, Texas Oilman And 'Father Of Fracking,' Dies At 94

HOUSTON -- George P. Mitchell leveraged a penchant for hard work, an appetite for risk and dogged persistence in the face of futility into a technological breakthrough that reshaped the global energy industry and made the wildcat oilman a billionaire.

Mitchell, the developer and philanthropist who also is considered the father of fracking, doggedly pursued natural gas he and others knew were trapped in wide, thin layers of rock deep underground. Fracking brought an entirely new ? and enormous ? trove of oil and gas within reach.

Mitchell died Friday at age 94 his home in Galveston, his family said.

The son of a Greek immigrant who ran a cleaning and shoeshine business in Galveston, Mitchell became one of the wealthiest men in the U.S. While his technological breakthrough transformed economies in states like North Dakota, Texas and Pennsylvania and is expected to migrate around the world, many environmentalists have attacked the practice over concerns about air and water pollution.

For the entire oil and gas age, drillers had searched for hydrocarbons that had seeped out of layers of sedimentary rock over millions of years and collected into large pools. Once found, they were easy to produce. Engineers merely had to drill into the pools and the natural pressure of the earth would send huge volumes of oil and gas up to the surface.

These pools are exceedingly rare, though, and they were quickly being tapped out as the world's consumption grew, raising fears that the end of the oil and gas age would soon be at hand and raising prices to alarming levels.

Mitchell's idea: Go directly to the sedimentary rock holding the oil and gas, essentially speeding up geological processes by thousands of millennia.

He figured out how to drill into and then along layers of gas-laden rock, then force a slurry of water, sand and chemicals under high pressure into the rock to crack it open and release the hydrocarbons. This process, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, is the now-common industry practice known generally as fracking.

Engineers after Mitchell learned to adapt the process to oil-bearing rock. The U.S. is now the world's largest producer of natural gas and is on track to overtake Saudi Arabia as the world's biggest oil producer by the end of the decade, according to the International Energy Agency.

Daniel Yergin, the energy historian and author of "The Quest: Energy, Security and the Remaking of the Modern World" said in a statement that Mitchell "Changed the world energy outlook in the 21st century and set in motion the global rebalancing of oil and gas that is now occurring."

The fracking boom sent natural gas prices plummeting, reducing energy costs for U.S. consumers and businesses. And by boosting U.S. oil production, it has sharply reduced oil imports.

Electric utilities used more natural gas to generate power because of its low price, while reducing the use of coal. This has led to a substantial reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide and toxic chemicals such as mercury by U.S. utilities.

But the practice has also sparked powerful antagonism, especially in the Northeast, from residents and environmentalists opposed to increased industrial activity in rural areas and concerned that the fracking process or the wastewater it generates can contaminate drinking water supplies.

New York, which is thought to have considerable natural gas resources, has imposed a moratorium on high-volume hydraulic fracturing and star-studded activist groups have staged countless rallies and events to generate opposition to the practice.

In some areas fracking has been blamed for air pollution and gas leaks that have ruined well water, but the Obama administration and many state regulators say the practice is safe when done properly.

Mitchell's family, on the family foundation website, said he died of natural causes while surrounded by relatives.

"His story was quintessentially American," the family statement said. "George P. Mitchell was raised as a child of meager means who, throughout his life, believed in giving back to the community that made his success possible and lending a hand to the less fortunate struggling to reach their potential."

George Phydias Mitchell and his wife, Cynthia, who died in 2009, had 10 children. Their work together was "dedicated to making the world a more hospitable and sustainable place," the family said.

Mitchell graduated first in his class of 1940 at Texas A&M University with degrees in petrochemical engineering and geology. He helped pay for his school costs by running a tailoring and laundry business in College Station and selling candy and stationery to his fellow student Aggies, then in later years became the school's largest benefactor with donations topping $95 million.

This year, the annual Forbes list of wealthiest Americans ranked him 239th with a net worth of $2 billion.

Mitchell spent four years in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. Afterward, he struck out on his own with a brother and a partner as a wildcatter operation.

Over his career, he participated in drilling some 10,000 wells, including more than 1,000 wildcats ? wells drilled away from known fields. His company, Mitchell Energy & Development, was credited with more than 200 oil and 350 natural gas discoveries.

The firm spent nearly two decades developing horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, finally finding success in North Texas' Barnett Shale formation in the 1990s.

"There's no point in mincing words. Some people thought it was stupid," Dan Steward, a geologist who began working with the Texas natural gas firm Mitchell Energy in 1981 told The Associated Press in an interview last year. Steward estimated in the early years, "probably 90 percent of the people" in the firm didn't believe shale gas would be profitable, and that Mitchell's company didn't even cover the cost of fracking on shale tests until the 36th well was drilled.

But he credited the company namesake as a tenacious visionary.

"There's not a lot of companies that would stay with something this long," he said. "Most companies would have given up."

"Because of Mitchell's persistence ... we are today witnessing an unprecedented boom in domestic energy production and the associated economic benefits in Texas and nationwide," Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Barry Smitherman agreed Friday.

Mitchell sold his energy company in 2002 for $3.1 billion.

Over the years, he spent tens of millions rebuilding his hometown of Galveston, resurrecting a long-dormant annual Mardi Gras celebration and providing money to restore the city's historic downtown Strand District.

He donated the land for Texas A&M University at Galveston.

"To say he was a great man with foresight and generosity isn't enough," Adm. Robert Smith III, the school's president, said. "His contributions to this university literally made this institution possible."

His Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, founded in 1979, has made more than $400 million in gifts.

In the early 1970s, Mitchell began developing The Woodlands, a suburban Houston master-planned community designed as a place for mixed-income residential development with jobs and amenities nearby while preserving the East Texas forest and other natural resources that covered the 27,000 acres. He later would call it his most satisfying achievement.

The Woodlands is now home to about 100,000 people, and one of the nation's busiest outdoor performing arts and entertainment venues there carries his wife's name, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

"His ambition and success have transformed our region," Houston Mayor Annise Parker said. "He was a visionary, and showed his love for Houston through his work and hometown pride."

Funeral arrangements were not immediately released.

Are your Children Ready for Real Life?

What Should a 21st Century Education Look Like?

We homeschooling parents know we?re giving our children a decent academic education. But let?s face it ? we sometimes wonder if we really know how to equip them to be the adults the 21st Century needs. After all, the world our children are inheriting will be more complex, uncertain, and turbulent than the one we had to face.

Will your children know how to handle business and finance in a down economy? Defend their faith to militant antagonists? Stand firm against a defiling culture? Fight for their freedoms? Take advantage of technological innovations? And see opportunity amid the chaos?

More importantly, what kind of salt and light are they prepared to be? They may be able to name every country in the world, but do they know how to disciple the nations? They may know about the Battle of Waterloo, but do they know how to fight the battles of today ? to win? Homeschoolers have proven they can beat the world at geography and spelling. But can we lead in the arts? Can we lead in the gates? Do we know how to take dominion of science and technology?

If your children are going to be the leaders of the 21st Century, they need to be educated for it. And even if you feel unprepared to equip them for this? there?s no one more qualified for the job than you.

A Pox on Optimists! ? naked capitalism

I?ve had it with optimism. Optimism, at least US style, got us into this mess. It gave us 30+ years of indulgent parenting in which self-esteem was considered to be more important than skill acquisition, self-discipline, cooperation, and learning to cope with adversity. It?s led to widespread magical thinking, that if you had the right attitude, you?d surely get ahead. Notice how everyone looking for a job is obligated to fake that they have passion? The Greeks understood that passion was an affliction, something you got when you were on the receiving end of Eros? arrow and as a result developed an insane, insatiable fixation on whatever you saw next, which in a best case scenario might be an unattainable but fetching female, and if you were unlucky, might be a goat.

My sense is the issue of motivation is more pressing in the zeitgeist than it used to be due to the how dark things are now and how difficult it appears to be to effect positive change. Over the last few weeks, we?ve had a running sub-theme in the comments section on how to motivate people to make sacrifices for future generations if you couldn?t appeal to religion. And in the last day, in a weird bit of sychronicity, I?ve seen two calls from members of the lonely faith of True Progressives, for Yet More Optimism.

When I was in a less cranky mood, back in 2008, I wrote in the Conference Board Review, apropos the corporate perma-fad for yet more chipperness:

?Negativity,? an awkward coinage, has widely come to be used pejoratively. Magical thinking, too, has become increas- ingly popular as a way to gain the illusion of control in an uncertain world. Rhonda Byrne?s motivational best-seller The Secret, for example, basically says that you get what you wish for. If you don?t have the things you want, it means you don?t have enough faith. In this construct, neither insufficient ef- fort nor bad luck plays a role.

In the business world, we?ve moved from hardheaded to feel-good management. As Financial Times columnist Lucy Kellaway observed recently: ?For people in any position of authority the ability to say no is the most important skill there is. . . . No, you can?t have a pay rise. No, you can?t be promoted. No, you can?t travel club class. . . . An illogical love of Yes is the basis for all modern management thought. The ideal modern manager is meant to be enabling, empowering, encouraging and nurturing, which means that his default po- sition must be Yes. By contrast, No is considered demotivating, uncreative and a thoroughly bad thing.?

To illustrate, Tom Peters? Leadership offers an impossible, irreconcilable list of exhortations: Be a great salesman, great storyteller, great performer, networking fiend, talent fanatic, relationship maven, visionary, profit-obsessive, and (of course) an optimist. Push your organization; know when to wait; love mess, politics, and new technology; lead by winning people over; foster open communication; show respect; embrace the whole individual. Granted, Peters does give a couple of breaks?leaders get to be angry and make mistakes. But his list is all sizzle, no steak. Not only are his executives reluctant to say no?they don?t develop any of the guts of what managing is really about: making decisions under uncertainty, creating routines, developing (not merely exhorting) direct reports, responding to crises, building in enough slack to deal with low-probability but high-consequence opportunities and risks.

By contrast, the normally sound Gaius Publius tells us that ?Action and optimism are critical to progressive victory:?

First, as I?ve said many times, the antidote for depression is action. So when you?re feeling down and hopeless, get up and do something. It?s amazing how much better you?ll feel. All those Action Opportunities you see from me? It?s because I?m concerned about your health, and want you to be happy.

Second, everyone has reach, a world within which we have an effect. Even the so-called least of us lives in a world we influence. Use your reach; you have no idea when a surprisingly good result will come from it.

Third, action is a choice, not a prediction. And except in rare circumstances, when inaction is more powerful, we must act to win. We could win a battle or lose a battle, win the war or lose it. But we must act as though we can win, or we never will win. In the longer interview, Eskow talks about how the Clintons, the Obamas, the Romneys and the Ryans, all want us to feel powerless, hopeless. That?s part of their plan, it shouldn?t be part of ours.

The antidote for mild depression isn?t optimism, it?s exercise (trust me, a lot of research on that), so part of this prescription is not far from the mark. But what good does it do for organizers to pump people up with talk of victory? You might motivate them short term, so optimism to move people forward can work when you can give people specific, attainable targets, like organizing and running a soup kitchen. Don?t get me wrong, this sort of very tangible local action is incredibly valuable. But optimism and desire are the tools of marketers. They create and exploit object or status lust. Look at how Obama?s con was based on sheer hopium, and how in 2012, he still had a remarkable number of loyal followers despite his clear record of dishonesty and abuse of his base.

Optimism and desire are likely to prove inadequate to carry most people through a protracted struggle against powerful and oppressive forces. Were labor leaders in the days of violence against unions (the persistence and savagery of corporate opposition to labor has been airbrushed out of the most histories), rely on happy talk as a major motivating strategy? Did people fighting for causes they thought would not be won in their life, like abolitionists and the early suffragettes, rely on optimism to get them through the day? What you need is tenacity. Getting people to find the internal resources for protracted battles where all they are likely to experience is losses requires a different headset than the sort of optimism that we?ve been deeply inculcated to rely on in America.

A different formulation of the ?think positive? school comes in ?Political Dreaming in the Twenty-First Century? by Ira Chernus in TomDispatch. It does get high marks for eloquence. Some key extracts:

Dreaming is the realm of pure freedom. In dreams, we can see, do, or be anything. When our dreams are political, they help us sense what it might be like to escape the limits imposed by corporations, the state, the media, the advertisers, powerful forces of every kind. They help us imagine in new ways what is possible. In our dreams, none of the powers that be can touch us?.

But a political dream is quite different from the dreaming of sleep because it happens while we are wide-awake. It may even make us feel more awake, allowing us to pierce the pre-packaged version of reality handed to us by the rich and powerful, who demand that we take their distorted version of how this place, this country, this planet works as ?realism? itself?.

Of course, we should never confuse our dreams and myths with specific policy proposals. That would endanger the chances of achieving policies that could bring us a few steps closer to realizing those dreams. Policies, after all, are always political artifacts, produced by compromises between our dreams and the hard facts of the present.

This sort of thing is likely essential for some people. But I have to say for myself that when the gap between your idealized world and what seems attainable is a yawning chasm, focusing on a remote dream seems like a prescription for guaranteed disappointment. Matt Stoller would often sputter to me that he?d lose his best organizers to organic gardening. My take was that it became too hard for them to keep projecting optimism (organizers are in the business of selling and selling in America requires an enthusiastic persona) and they decided they?d rather do something where they could put effort in and see tangible results.

And this bit troubles me:

It may even make us feel more awake, allowing us to pierce the pre-packaged version of reality handed to us by the rich and powerful, who demand that we take their distorted version of how this place, this country, this planet works as ?realism? itself.

That sort of high, which is a variant of the endorphin high of romance, sounds an awful lot like how people who?ve been in cults recount the feeling when they fell under the cult leader?s sway. The loss of personal boundaries in being subsumed in a group can be very powerful emotionally, but it also makes the participants ripe for manipulation.

So what are mere mortals, or the insufficiently dreamy, to do? Victor Frankl, concentration camp survivor and author of Man?s Search for Meaning, would often start his therapy sessions by asking his patient, ?Why haven?t you killed yourself?? He found that what enabled people in concentration camps to endure was either that they had a loved one they wanted to live for, or they had some sort of creative work they wanted to accomplish. The interesting bit about the loved ones is that many of the survivors learned that turned out to be a delusion, that many had assumed they were dead and had moved on to other relationships.

I?m up for a much more fundamental rethink of cultural values. The pursuit of optimism has both a hedonistic element (we want to feel good emotionally) and Judeo-Christian dualism (optimism is a good, safe, nice, clean emotion, we don?t need to think about our nasty chthonic drives). It requires an ongoing, active effort to deny significant parts of our personality and human experience, which is why I?m dubious of its ability to sustain people over the long haul (admittedly, there are some people who are blessed with naturally sunny dispositions, but they don?t have to exhort them, they just seem to have been lucky in the brain chemistry they inherited).

I have to confess I?m not deeply enough read in it to be sure, but Stoicism has gotten a bad rap, and it has a lot to recommend it in times like ours. Stoics have a lot in common with Buddhists, in that they believe in cultivating emotionally equanimity and resilience no matter what your external circumstances. What appeals to me about Stoicism is that they have a non-Christian (as in not driven by fear that God will get you in the afterlife if you are bad) foundation for morality. From Wikipedia:

A primary aspect of Stoicism involves improving the individual?s ethical and moral well-being: ?Virtue consists in a will that is in agreement with Nature.? This principle also applies to the realm of interpersonal relationships; ?to be free from anger, envy, and jealousy,? and to accept even slaves as ?equals of other men, because all men alike are products of nature.?

The Stoic ethic espouses a deterministic perspective; in regard to those who lack Stoic virtue, Cleanthes once opined that the wicked man is ?like a dog tied to a cart, and compelled to go wherever it goes.??

Borrowing from the Cynics, the foundation of Stoic ethics is that good lies in the state of the soul itself; in wisdom and self-control?

The idea was to be free of suffering through apatheia (Greek: ???????) or peace of mind (literally, ?without passion?), where peace of mind was understood in the ancient sense?being objective or having ?clear judgment? and the maintenance of equanimity in the face of life?s highs and lows.

In this framework, people like Jamie Dimon are correctly seen as unhinged and destructive.

Stoics also were big on empiricism, as this section of Marcus Aurelius? Meditations show:

Make for yourself a definition or description of the thing which is presented to you, so as to see distinctly what kind of a thing it is in its substance, in its nudity, in its complete entirety, and tell yourself its proper name, and the names of the things of which it has been compounded, and into which it will be resolved. For nothing is so productive of elevation of mind as to be able to examine methodically and truly every object that is presented to you in life, and always to look at things so as to see at the same time what kind of universe this is, and what kind of use everything performs in it, and what value everything has with reference to the whole.

If any readers can recommend any classics that have decent translations, please list them in comments. I feel we need to find new ways, on a practical and philosophical level, to get out of the mess we are in, and it can?t hurt to see if past schools of thought can provide fresh vantages.
